At work we need to see well and for this we use prescription glasses. But there are tasks in which in addition to seeing well we need to protect our eyes.
A high percentage of workplace accidents result in an eye injury. The function of protective glasses is to prevent splashes, chemical elements, gases or small solid particles from reaching our eyes.
In the market we will find glasses with various characteristics and treatments. They are available with an integral frame (the lenses and the frame form a single piece), with a universal frame (simpler), with anti-fog, anti-dust treatment, with solar protection, hermetic, ventilated. Even with extendable temples like the Pegaso Felix 177.01
It is important to consider these details before purchasing ours.
What work glasses do I need?
If we use prescription lenses and want to keep our eyes safe, we have two options:
1- Wear eyeglasses on our usual frame
2- Order safety glasses with prescription glasses
Which is the best option? Next, we tell you the differences between the two possibilities.
Safety over glasses
Safety goggles are indicated for occasional non-continuous use.
The reason is that the time spent putting them on and taking them off can be cumbersome. But if we only need protection at certain times, a pair of eyeglasses is a good choice.
It can be placed on the prescription glasses that we already have on. Although people who do not wear glasses also use it as a protection element.
Normally their lenses are neutral, without prescription and made of colorless polycarbonate.
There are trades that require extra protection, as in the case of welding jobs. At the end of this post we tell you in more detail about the special welding lenses.
To fulfill their protective function, they must have the required characteristics according to the place and working conditions. We recommend using the appropriate ones to be protected according to the risks of your type of work.
Advantage
- They are cheaper
- You can use them on different glasses

Safety glasses for welding
If you do welding works, you will need lens with extra protection against ultraviolet, visible and infrared radiation.
The type of filter in welding glasses and over glasses is indicated in DIN followed by a number between 1 and 15. Some glasses with DIN 1 have a transparent glass and some DIN 15 a totally opaque glass.
For gas welding your ideal option would be Overon 155.01 with DIN 5. This model can be used on prescription glasses or as direct protection.
Welding glasses can be prescription glasses too.
Eye protection following the EN166 standard
The EN 166 standard is the minimum requirement that any safety glasses must meet. This protection guarantees its solidity, an adequate field of view, optical requirements and resistance to corrosion and aging.
On lenses certified to the EN166 standard, you will also see letters that indicate the degree of impact protection. They will be S, F, B, A or T.
In the end it all depends on the type of work you do
The conclusion is that if you only need to use protection in your eyes at specific times, over-glasses is sufficient and much cheaper.
If you need eye protection throughout your working day and use prescription glasses, you should definitely order prescription work glasses. They will be your best investment to keep your eyes protected at all times.
